Liya is an Azerbaijani-American singing actor, residing in St. Louis, Missouri.
Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, Liya moved to Atlanta as an infant. She began ballet at the age of 4, but began singing 10 years later, going on to obtain her Bachelors and Masters in Vocal Performance.
Liya has performed a variety of operatic roles including the Taumännchen (Dew Fairy) from Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, Sorella Infermiera from Puccini’s Suor Angelica, and Papagena in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. Liya sang the role of Adele in Lamont Opera Theatre's scenes production of Die Fledermaus. She was in the world premier of Frau Schindler at USC with the USC Thornton Symphony and Thornton Opera.
Her musical theatre roles include Frenchie in Grease, various characters from I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, and Cinderella in Into the Woods. She has also recorded original music for Rubies, a workshop musical by Osi Sladek.
In 2017 Liya had the honor of performing in Anne Bogart's production of Lost in the Stars, a production in tandem with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and Bogart's SITI Company in New York.
Along with singing, Liya has directed an abridged version of Mozart's Così fan tutte with LTD Opera in Los Angeles in 2016. During her time at USC she assistant directed under Ken Cazan for La Clemenza di Tito. She also directed various opera scenes for USC Chamber Opera's opera scenes program in 2015.
Most recently Liya performed with Union Avenue Opera's production of Candide, alongside St. Louis native Christine Brewer.
Liya has worked in the St. Louis theatre scene, assistant directing two plays in 2017 (A Tree Falling and Infected) with Upstream Theatre in St. Louis, Missouri, a AEA company, alongside directors Michael Dorsey and Patrick Siler.
Liya holds her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music and her Master of Music in Vocal Arts from the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music.
Liya has studied with bass Ken Cox, soprano Kate Emerich-Gordon, soprano Elizabeth Bice in Vienna, and mezzo-soprano Cynthia Munzer at USC.
Liya currently studies with soprano Karen Kanakis in St. Louis.
